Nordic Walking origins are in the thirty years of 20th century. Finnish long-distance skiers included ‘walking with sticks’ on surfaces without snow into their summer trainings.
In the 80s, the American Tom Rutlin developed a new technique: EXERSTRIDER.
In 1997, the Finnish Marko Kantaneva developed another technique: SAUVAKÄVELY (Original Nordic Walking).
In 2000, the American Dan Barret developed another technique: FITTREK.
In 2000s, Competitive Nordic Walking was developed with Athletics judges and EXERSTRIDER and FITTREK techniques. Example: the Nordic Walking World Championship of Portland Marathon was done with Athletics judges and EXERSTRIDER and FITTREK techniques.
World Ranking Nordic Walking is dedicated to Competitive Nordic Walking.
